Quartzsite’s Gems: How a Desert Town Became a Global Gathering Place

From glittering gemstones to gleaming RVs, Quartzsite transforms each winter into one of the Southwest’s most fascinating seasonal gatherings where collectors, nomads, and snowbirds converge in search of discovery

This is the second part of my two-part series on Quartzsite winter adventures. In Part 1, I explored the desert city that springs up overnight from its boondocking communities to the seasonal culture that transforms the town each winter. Here, I dive deeper into the Quartzsite RV Show and the rock and gem events that make this desert gathering truly extraordinary.

Each winter, Quartzsite becomes a hub for RV enthusiasts, collectors, and adventurers alike. The Quartzsite Sports, Vacation & RV Show held January 17–25, 2026 brings hundreds of exhibitors together under the massive Big Tent and across the surrounding grounds, showcasing new and used RVs, accessories, and innovations for life on the road.

Just steps away, the Tyson Wells Rock & Gem Show, Sell-A-Rama, and related events unfold in every direction creating a sprawling landscape of minerals, fossils, handcrafted jewelry, and artisan goods. Together, these gatherings transform the desert into a temporary marketplace unlike any other—one where curiosity leads the way and every path offers something unexpected.

Each winter, the quiet desert town of Quartzsite undergoes a transformation that feels almost impossible to imagine. What for most of the year is a sunbaked stretch of sand and highway suddenly becomes a sprawling, temporary city—one built not of concrete and glass but of tents, trailers, and shared curiosity. At the heart of this seasonal metamorphosis lies one of the largest and most unusual gatherings of its kind in the world: the Quartzsite gem and mineral shows.

Long before RVs filled the horizon, Quartzsite drew prospectors and rockhounds searching for hidden treasures beneath the sand. Those early explorations planted the seeds for what would become a winter tradition. Over time, informal meetups evolved into organized shows, and small gatherings grew into an international event stretching across miles of desert terrain.

Today, the shows spread through areas like Tyson Wash, La Posa North, South, and West, and the grounds surrounding Tyson Wells. Dealers arrive from across the globe with everything from raw quartz and fossil specimens to polished gemstones and handcrafted jewelry. The result is less a single event than a living, breathing marketplace—part trade show, part open-air museum, and part desert festival.

Unlike traditional convention halls, Quartzsite’s gem shows have no walls and few boundaries. Visitors wander freely between tents, strike up conversations with longtime vendors, and discover stories behind every stone. Many sellers return to the same patch of desert year after year, forming seasonal neighborhoods where friendships are renewed and traditions continue. The atmosphere is unhurried, welcoming, and deeply human—an experience as much about connection as it is about commerce.

The RV Show: Where Quartzsite comes fully alive

Rolling into the heart of desert excitement

Just beyond the gem tents and dusty vendor rows, another spectacle takes shape each winter—larger, louder, and unmistakably central to Quartzsite’s seasonal identity. The Quartzsite RV Show is not simply an event; it is the heartbeat of the season, the moment when the desert’s temporary city reaches full stride.

What began decades ago as a modest gathering of RV enthusiasts has grown into one of the most distinctive RV events in North America. Unlike traditional RV shows held in convention centers or fairgrounds, the Quartzsite RV Show unfolds almost entirely outdoors. A massive white tent rises from the desert floor flanked by open-air exhibits, demonstration areas, and rows of RVs stretching toward the horizon. It’s part trade show, part social gathering, and part desert festival.

The show’s roots trace back to the growing RV movement of the 1970s and ’80s when Quartzsite began attracting winter travelers seeking mild weather, open land, and freedom from campground reservations. As RV ownership expanded, so did the need for a gathering place where travelers could learn, shop, and connect. The show evolved organically shaped by the same independent spirit that defines life on the road.

Unlike glossy dealer expos, the Quartzsite RV Show has always embraced practicality. Visitors come not just to admire new rigs but to solve real-world problems. Solar systems, water filtration setups, satellite internet, suspension upgrades, and clever storage solutions take center stage. Vendors aren’t just selling products—they’re sharing hard-earned knowledge with people who live the lifestyle every day.

By the time the show reaches full swing in January, the surrounding desert feels like a city in motion. RVs line the roads, generators hum in the distance, and conversations echo from booth to booth. It’s a place where first-time RV owners ask questions beside seasoned travelers who’ve logged hundreds of thousands of miles. Deals are made, friendships formed, and travel plans revised on the spot.

In 2026, the Quartzsite Sports, Vacation & RV Show—often called simply the Quartzsite RV Show—returns as a centerpiece of the winter season. The event runs January 17–25, 2026 at the Quartzsite Showgrounds on 700 S. Central Blvd with daily hours typically 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (closing at 3 p.m. on the final day). Free and open to the public, the nine-day show brings hundreds of exhibitors, service providers, and RV manufacturers together under the massive “Big Tent” and across the grounds, showcasing hundreds of new and used RVs alongside parts, accessories, and outdoor gear for nomads and road travelers alike.

Reflections on Quartzsite: A winter desert celebration

Where winter brings wonder to the desert

Quartzsite in winter is more than a destination—it’s a state of mind. Between the glittering aisles of the rock and gem shows and the rows of gleaming RVs at the Quartzsite Sports, Vacation & RV Show, visitors are reminded that discovery comes in many forms. One moment you’re marveling at a rare mineral specimen; the next, you’re chatting with a fellow traveler about solar setups, road trips, and the freedom of life on wheels.

The magic of Quartzsite lies in its temporary city, a place where tents, trailers, and personalities converge for a shared love of adventure and exploration. Here, collectors, crafters, and RV enthusiasts coexist, each drawn by curiosity and a desire to experience something beyond the ordinary. The energy is infectious, the pace unhurried, and the opportunities for learning and connection endless.

For many, the appeal isn’t just in what they purchase—it’s in what they experience. The stories behind the stones, the friendships formed in the desert, and the chance to witness a town transform into a vibrant, wandering community all contribute to a memory that lasts far longer than a single trip. Quartzsite’s seasonal gatherings are a reminder that the journey whether across a desert parking lot or along an open highway is as meaningful as the destination itself.

Concluding thoughts

As the RV show season wraps up, it’s worth remembering that these events are about much more than floorplans and price tags. They’re about inspiration—seeing what’s possible, imagining where the road might lead next, and reconnecting with the spirit of travel that draws so many of us to life on wheels. Whether you attend one show or several, each visit offers a chance to learn, explore, and refine what “the perfect RV experience” looks like for you.

RV shows also remind us that the journey doesn’t begin when the engine starts—it begins with curiosity, conversation, and a willingness to explore new ideas. From seasoned full-timers to first-time buyers, everyone walks away with something different: knowledge, excitement, or maybe just a renewed sense of adventure. As you plan your travels for the year ahead, let these shows be both a resource and a source of inspiration for wherever the road may take you next.

Quartzsite: The Desert City That Springs Up Overnight

Each winter, a quiet desert town in western Arizona transforms almost overnight into a bustling metropolis of RVs, tents, and adventurers—a temporary city built on curiosity, ingenuity, and the thrill of life on the move

Every winter, a quiet desert town in western Arizona undergoes a transformation that defies imagination. Quartzsite, home to fewer than 3,000 permanent residents, suddenly swells with tens of thousands of RVs, tents, and people stretching as far as the eye can see. In a matter of days, dusty roads become bustling avenues, campfires and generators hum in unison, and the desert pulses with a temporary city’s energy—a place where adventure, self-reliance, and a touch of eccentricity rule the landscape.

People & culture

Where community blooms in the desert

Even the desert itself seems to have a sense of humor. The camel-driving Hi Jolly may be gone but his pyramid-shaped monument still stands—a reminder that Quartzsite has long attracted visitors seeking something out of the ordinary from 19th-century adventurers to today’s snowbird RVers. Much like the tales of Nomadland, the town has always been a crossroads for wanderers, a place where mobility, ingenuity, and a touch of eccentricity reign supreme.

For first-time visitors, the draw often starts with the Quartzsite RV Show, a sprawling tented spectacle stretching longer than two football fields. Inside and around it, vendors sell everything from RV parts and solar panels to pet supplies and back adjusters.

But the show is just the tip of the iceberg—what really defines Quartzsite is the temporary city that blooms around it. Tens of thousands of RVs park across the surrounding BLM lands, free or nearly free, creating a bustling metropolis in the desert that exists for a few short months each year.

Returning snowbirds often occupy the same spot year after year staking their claim in this seasonal haven. Amid the hum of generators, the glow of campfires, and the chatter of fellow travelers, a culture of self-reliance and community thrives. Innovations—from solar setups to mobile internet strategies—emerge here first, spreading across the RV world like seeds carried on the desert wind.

Quartzsite is both spectacle and society: a place where RVs outnumber houses, where strangers become neighbors, and where the past and present collide. It’s a city that exists in motion, built by those drawn to its freedom, its oddities, and the shared adventure of life on the move.

Temporary city in action

A town that thrives in a flash

Step into Quartzsite during peak winter and the desert is alive in a way that defies imagination. Streets of RVs stretch for miles forming a patchwork city of aluminum, fiberglass, and canvas. Generators hum, campfires crackle, and the scent of desert sage mixes with the aroma of morning coffee and sizzling breakfast skillets. It’s a city built on impermanence—one that appears almost overnight and disappears just as quickly—but for those who arrive, it feels vividly, thrillingly real.

Vendors stake their claims on the sandy lots setting up tents and trailers filled with everything a traveler could dream of—or didn’t even know they needed. Solar panels gleam in the sun, handcrafted jewelry sparkles on tables, and stacks of polished quartz and rare minerals draw collectors from around the world. From RV repair specialists to pet groomers and mobile chiropractors, Quartzsite’s economy exists entirely to serve the temporary city and its transient citizens.

Amid the organized chaos, friendships form over shared campfires, impromptu potlucks, and long stretches of desert road. Families, solo travelers, and full-time nomads mingle seamlessly, united by curiosity, adventure, and a willingness to embrace life on the move. Even the most seasoned snowbirds find themselves captivated by the scale and spirit of the place discovering new tricks for boondocking, solar setups, or desert survival.

As the sun dips below the horizon, the desert glows with thousands of lanterns, string lights, and campfires casting a warm glow over a city that exists only for a season. It’s a spectacle, a community, and a story in motion—a living reminder that Quartzsite isn’t just a destination, it’s an experience, one that every RVer should witness at least once.

Boondocking heaven: Living the desert way

Freedom under the open sky

Quartzsite isn’t just a winter playground—it’s a boondocker’s paradise. The surrounding BLM lands including the massive La Posa Long-Term Visitor Area (LTVA) offer thousands of acres where RVers can stay for weeks—or even months—at little more than a dollar a day. Here, freedom reigns: there are no reservations, no permanent addresses, just wide-open desert and a patchwork of campers staking their spots.

For snowbirds and nomads alike, claiming the perfect campsite becomes a ritual. Some return year after year to the same sandy stretch forming unofficial neighborhoods of friends and familiar faces. While services are minimal—portable toilets, dump stations, and occasional potable water fill-ins—the self-reliance of this community creates its own kind of infrastructure. In Quartzsite, survival, ingenuity, and a sense of camaraderie define the boondocking experience as much as the desert itself.

Winter’s gift: Mild days, starry nights

Desert days that warm; nights that dazzle

The desert’s extremes make Quartzsite inhospitable most of the year. Summer temperatures can rival Death Valley keeping all but the hardiest away. But winter brings a reprieve: daytime highs in the 60s and low 70s, crisp nights perfect for campfires, and endless sunrises over saguaros and distant mountains.

It’s this mild weather that transforms the desert into a seasonal city inviting tens of thousands of RVers to set up temporary homes. Dusty roads hum with activity while the chill of dawn encourages coffee-fueled camaraderie among neighbors. The desert, harsh yet beautiful, shapes the rhythms of daily life—boondocking, hiking, gem hunting, and gathering around the shared experiences that make Quartzsite more than just a stopover.

Transition to the follow-up: Quartzsite RVs, gems, and desert adventure

Where wheels, wonders, and wide-open spaces meet

From its humble beginnings in the 1960s to the sprawling desert tent cities of today, Quartzsite has grown into a seasonal phenomenon unlike any other. The winter desert pulses with activity from boondocking communities and roaming nomads to vendors showcasing treasures both natural and mechanical. For first-time visitors, navigating this kaleidoscope of RVs, campfires, and glittering gems can feel overwhelming—but it’s also a chance to witness a community built entirely on curiosity, ingenuity, and a love of life on the move.

The Quartzsite RV Show: A First Timers Guide

The Quartzsite RV Show is a must-visit event for RV enthusiasts featuring vendors, camping, and outdoor adventures in Arizona’s desert. The show takes place every January and attracts a large crowd of RVers.

Quartzsite, Arizona, is a winter mecca for RVers for a good reason. The warm temperatures and plentiful sunshine beckon snowbirds down from the North into the beautiful desert of Arizona. In addition to the mild weather, Quartzsite claims to have the largest gathering of RVers worldwide.

This tiny town normally has a population of less than 2,500 people. However, the population can swell up to 2 million in the winter months. At least half of those people come to visit the Quartzsite Sports, Vacation and RV Show.

The Quartzsite Sports, Vacation & RV Show is a free annual event held every January (the next is scheduled for January 18-26, 2025) throughout Quartzsite and the surrounding area. The show features hundreds of new and used RVs for sale and anything related to RVs. The event’s Big Tent is home to hundreds of vendors featuring RV gear, services, campgrounds, trip ideas, live music, seminars, and food and drink.

The show takes place over eight days and many RVers come for at least a few days. While there are several campgrounds in the Quartzsite area, this is the land of inexpensive or free dry camping.

The desert around Quartzsite is a haven for boondockers. There are thousands of acres of Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land where you can park your RV for free or for a minimal price. While the area attracts snowbirds all winter long, the area can fill up during the time of the show.

This area is so vast that there is also no reason to stay close to the show the entire time. The nearby mountains offer rugged ATV trails and beautiful hiking as well as a few ghost towns, mines, and even a solar-powered bar located in the mountains.

Timing and travel logistics

Quartzsite is located at the crossroads of Interstate 10 and U.S. Route 95 in Arizona. It’s about three hours south of Las Vegas and two hours west of Phoenix. While it’s not the middle of nowhere, it’s pretty darn close.

In general, Quartzsite is a small town and local amenities are limited. The town has two small grocery stores, a Dollar General, a Family Dollar, a liquor store, a hardware store, and a few fuel stations that stock snacks and drinks. The town also has a handful of restaurants. If you need any specific items or more variety, plan to shop at a store in a larger town or city on your way to the event.

You can fill your propane tank and water tank at numerous places within Quartzsite. Many of the campgrounds, fuel stations, and truck stops sell propane and have dump stations. The town also offers water-filling stations for about 25 cents per gallon.

If you can, the best time to head to Quartzsite is several weeks to several days before the RV show begins. There will be less traffic and more camping options. Arriving early will also allow you to check out the various camping options before the major crowds show up.

During the height of the RV show lines for dump stations, water stations, and garbage drops can be hours long. Plan ahead to fill up or dump when most people have left.

Where to stay during the Quartzsite Show

RV Parks

While Quartzsite is known for its abundant dispersed camping areas, the town also has plenty of campgrounds and RV parks. If you want to stay at an RV park, note that many of these parks are home to RVers who live in Quartzsite long-term or year-round so sites may be limited.

A few campgrounds include:

  • The Scenic Road RV Park
  • Split Rail RV Park
  • Arizona Sun RV Park
  • Holiday Palms RV Park
  • Quail Run RV Park
  • Rice Ranch RV Park
  • Quartzsite RV Resort

Dispersed camping

Quartzsite is famous for its plentiful dispersed camping areas. In these areas, you can park your RV and camp for free for up to 14 days. This is dry camping with no hookups or access to water, bathroom facilities, or electricity. Pick up free 14-day permits at each location from the camp host.

The main dispersed camping areas include:

  • Plomosa Road
  • Dome Rock Mountain
  • Scaddan Wash
  • Road Runner Wash
  • Hi Jolly
  • Tyson Wash

La Posa Long-Term Visitor Area (LTVA)

The BLM has set aside several areas for long-term visitors to Quartzsite. Here, you can camp without having to move every 14 days. The LTVA also offers some amenities such as bathrooms, water stations, garbage dumps, and dump stations. An LTVA short-term pass for 14 days is available for $40.

Navigating the show grounds

The Quartzsite RV Show is massive so having a game plan and some good walking shoes will be helpful.

Parking: Parking is free at the event but does fill up quickly. Parking is primarily for cars and smaller vans so don’t bring your larger RV to the event itself; it won’t fit. If you can, carpool with other attendees or have someone drop you off at the event entrance.

The Big Tent: The Big Tent is the main attraction of the show. At over 74,000 square feet, it fits hundreds of vendors and thousands of people. The best way to maneuver through the tent is just to wander around until you find a vendor or exhibit that appeals to you. If you are looking for a specific vendor, the show has a floorplan of where they are located.

Exhibitors and vendors: From solar systems and roadside assistance to RV lots and electric bikes the show’s exhibitors run the gamut. Most are located inside the Big Tent but several are also located outside the tent in an area called Midway.

Food vendors: The show also features several food and drink vendors and food trucks. These booths are outside the big tent and include hot dogs and hamburgers, international foods, funnel cakes, ice cream, and beer gardens.

RV Show: RVs for sale are located to the sides and rear of the Big Tent. Hundreds of fifth wheels, Class A, B, and C rigs, vans, teardrops, and other trailers are available to tour and test. Special pricing is available for many of the RVs during the show.

Tyson Wells: While this massive swap meet and shopping area is not technically part of the Quartzsite RV show, it is another popular stop for RVers. Located right next to the Big Tent area, Tyson Wells features a rock and gem show, an arts and crafts fair, and retail booths and market vendors. The market is over 25 acres and you are bound to find anything you need or want here.

Must-see exhibits and vendors

There are several exhibitors this year that are a must-see. These vendors are either offering the latest tech gear for the DIYer or unique options for any RVer.

  • Adventure Solar for DIY RV solar kits
  • Blue Ox towing packages and sway kits
  • LooLoo toilet freshener
  • Nomad Internet
  • RockPot outdoor cooking without electricity

Staying comfortable in the desert

If you have never camped in the desert before, there are a few things to consider for both you and your RV.

Weather preparation

While Quartzsite is located in a desert, it’s not always hot and dry. This portion of the Sonoran Desert can experience some cold nights and even cloudy skies and rain during the winter months.

Prepare for more unseasonable weather with the following:

  • Pack layers for chilly mornings and nights and prepare to take them off mid-day
  • Warm hat, gloves, and scarf or Buff

When the sun does shine, be sure to include some sunscreen in your packing list. Chapstick or lip balm is helpful, too. Visitors to the desert who are not used to the dry climate may also experience issues with dry nostrils and a scratchy throat. Pack some saline, Vaseline, or Bag Balm for dry noses and drink plenty of water throughout the day.

Desert dwellers will sometimes warn visitors about valley fever. Officially named coccidioidomycosis, this sickness is caused by a fungus that can be common in the deserts of California and Arizona. Valley fever causes coughing, shortness of breath, and sometimes a red rash. While not very common, the dust and wind of Quartzsite can kick this fungus up into the air. If you are susceptible to certain lung infections, pack a few N95 or surgical masks.

Desert-proofing your RV

The desert can be tough on your rig as well. Dust can find its way into the cracks and crevices of your windows and vents. Gusty winds can damage awnings and doors and toss around lawn chairs. Any time you leave your RV put away your awning, grills, outdoor furniture, and pet cages.

In addition to wind, the sun can also beat down on RVs and outdoor gear. However, the plentiful sun is very helpful if you have a solar system.

Here are a few necessary and helpful items to bring along in your RV kit to Quartzsite:

  • Extra food and water: To avoid long lines at water stations and the town’s small stores pack a little extra.
  • Large trash bags: Quartzsite has a public transfer station and the LTVA has a dumpster but lines can get long. Plan to hang on to your trash a bit longer than you normally would.
  • Outdoor rug: An outdoor rug near your door will help to keep out dust and dirt. Stake the rug down to keep the wind from blowing it into the next county.
  • Painter’s tape and Reflectix: Temporarily installing some sheets of Reflectix with painter’s tape over your windows and any seals will block out most of the dust and cold from seeping into your RV.
  • Portable waste tank: At the height of the RV show, the lines for the dump stations can last for hours. Utilize a portable waste tank to extend the life of your black tanks.

Meeting fellow RVers and making connections

One of the best parts of this event is being around other like-minded RVers and lovers of camping. Meeting people and sharing travel stories is easy in Quartzsite. Along with the seminars, this time of year is also great for meet-and-greets, special events, campfire circles, discussion groups, and other community get-togethers.

Several RV groups meet during this time of year in Quartzsite. These include:

  • Outdoors RV
  • Truck Camper Adventure
  • Escapees RV Club
  • Fiberglass RV
  • Rubber Tramp Rendezvous (RTR) and Women’s RTR
  • Newmar Kountry Klub

The best way to join one of these meetups is to follow the groups on their forums or social media. They will post dates, times, and locations within the Quartzsite area. They may also invite you to camp in their area.

A word about internet access

When Quartzsite fills up during the month of January, cell service can slow down to a crawl. A few cell towers are in the area but when several thousand people enter town, they can get a little bogged down. Plan your communication with groups beforehand or bring a cell booster or Starlink with you.

Essential packing list for the Quartzsite RV Show

Along with your weather preparation kit, here are a few helpful items to bring with you to the RV show:

  • Good walking shoes: You will probably walk for miles through the Big Tent, around the outdoor rig show, the Tyson Wells swap meet, and to and from the yummy food stalls.
  • Backpack or tote bag: In your backpack or tote, bring a bottle of drinking water, snacks, sunscreen, a warm hat and gloves, a sun hat, and room for any swag or purchases from the show vendors.
  • Cash in small bills: Most vendors do take credit cards but in case card readers or cell service is spotty, bring cash in smaller denominations to pay for food and vendor items. Small bills are also handy for tipping the musicians or live music performers.
  • Phone with camera and notes app: If you are in the market for an RV and are using the show to shop around, use your camera and notes app to document the rigs that you tour and are interested in. Take photos of the show pricing tags and dealer business cards.

Final tips for a successful first visit at the Quartzsite RV Show

The Quartzsite Sports, Vacation & RV Show is not the largest in the US but it’s one of the most unique. The show literally rebuilds the town of Quartzsite every year into something new and different and it’s one of the RV events you should experience at least once.

However, before you pack up and take off, here are a few more tips for the 2025 event:

  • Plan for crowds: Each year, the Quartzsite event gets bigger and busier. If you want to avoid crowds, plan to come early and stay later to avoid most of the rush. Visit most of the vendors and rigs on a weekday and avoid opening day.
  • Stay flexible: If the crowds and energy are too much for you, then take some time to escape back to your campsite and rig. While you might feel a little FOMO (fear of missing out) there will be plenty of other events to enjoy. In fact, take a few days away from Quartzsite to check out the local natural areas, hiking trails, and nearby towns.
  • Have an exit strategy: Stay as long as possible after the event to avoid the lines of vehicles leaving town. The highways around Quartzsite will lighten up at the end of the event but take your time and plan to leave when other visitors have already gone. Or stick around to enjoy a few more days of the warm desert sun.

Quartzsite: Here’s the 2025 QZ Show Schedule

If you can’t find it at Quartzsite, it hasn’t been thought of yet

Every January something happens that is hard to believe—unless you have seen it.

According to the Arizona Highway Department, as many as 750,000 to 1,000,000 people mostly in RVs converge on this sleepy little desert town located just 20 miles east of the California border on Interstate 10 for the rock, gem, and mineral shows plus numerous flea markets and the Quartzsite Sports, Vacation & RV Show. This phenomenon started over 40 years ago and is now billed as The Largest Gathering of RVers in the World.

The winter season is go time in Quartzsite. With winter temperatures hovering in the 70s, people flock to Quartzsite from colder climates to relish the warm weather and fascinating shopping. Thousands of vendors gather during these months to showcase items ranging from rocks, gems, and minerals to jewelry, apparel, home decor, and more.

Where is Quartzsite?

Quartzsite is located in western Arizona, just 20 miles east of the Colorado River on I-10. It’s been a rockhound’s paradise since the 1960s. These days, it’s also a mecca to well over a million visitors each year, most of who converge on this small town in a wave of RVs during January and February.

During the winter months, 2,000 vendors of rocks, gems, minerals, fossils, and everything else imaginable create one of the world’s largest open-air flea markets in Quartzsite. Eight major gem and mineral shows in addition to vendors of raw and handcrafted merchandise peddle their wares to snowbirds, collectors, and enthusiasts making Quartzsite the place to be in January and February.

History of Quartzsite

In 1856, settler Charles Tyson built a fort at the present site of Quartzsite to protect his water supply. Fort Tyson soon became a stopover on the Ehrenburg-to-Prescott stagecoach route eventually becoming known as Tyson’s Wells. The stage stopped running when the railway was built through the area in the 1880s and it became a ghost town.

A post office was established at Tyson Wells in the summer of 1893 but was closed in 1895.

In 1896 the post office reopened with the new name of Quartzsite since the postal authorities would not allow a branch to reopen with the same name. A bureaucratic misspelling resulted in an s being added to the mineral that was the town’s namesake.

Weather and climate

Quartzsite has a classic low desert climate with extremely low relative humidity and very high summer temperatures. On average, it receives less than 4 inches of precipitation a year. Stores, shops, restaurants, theaters, and homes are air-conditioned year-round in Quartzsite. June, July, August and September temperatures are in the 100-plus ranges.

Tyson Wells show history

Tyson Wells began with an open lot where an RV Park was developed; the Sell-A-Rama Show started in 1978. Soon Tyson Wells became known as a leading Rock & Gem Show in the United States. Later, additional land was acquired for more parking, and two more shows—Rock & Gem Show and Art & Craft Fair—were added. Tyson Wells has something for everyone with the three shows in January and February, seasonal vendors, self-storage units, and an RV Park.

Rock, Mineral, and Gem Show

Quartzsite is a rock collector’s paradise. For everything you need to make artsy rock art and jewelry, look no further. Thousands of rock hounds flock here to get magic rocks of every size and sparkle. Now, don’t be expecting beautifully displayed juried show wares and supplies. It’s nothing more than a huge outdoor desert flea market venue. However, once you get past the sand and dirt, you’re sure to find the perfect gem you may be looking for.

Tyson Wells Flea Market

If you’re looking for something odd or don’t want to pay top dollar in those big box stores, the Tyson Wells Flea Market may just be the place where you can find it. You’ll find tools, kitchen gadgets, flags, blanket throws, clothes bandanas, and all kinds of stupid stuff all on the cheap. There are RV supplies and camping accessories too.

Quartzsite Sports, Vacation & RV Show

For nine days, RVers descend on the giant exhibit tent to see the latest gadgets, get work and upgrades done on their RVs and learn more about the RV lifestyle with workshops and seminars where attendees can learn about topics from trip planning to safety upgrades, solar and batteries, boondocking, and how to shop for an RV. Attendance at the event is free as is parking.

One can expect to see the who’s who of the RV industry but the stars of the show are the over 400 exhibitors (set up in and around the Big Tent—a 70,000-square-foot fully carpeted structure) selling everything from the latest and greatest RV gadgets to fashion jewelry to local honey. Some big tent vendors also have cellphones and electronic gadgets, glass fingernail files, dip mixes, and other vendors with non-RV junk.

If you’re looking for anything related to RVs, you’ll find it at the show in Quartzsite. It’s something every RVer should have on their bucket list and experience at least once in their lifetime.

Tomb of Hi Jolly © Rex Vogel, all rights reserved

Tomb Of Hi Jolly

If you’ve ever asked yourself, “Who in the world is Hi Jolly and why is his tomb in Quartzsite, Arizona?” then get ready because you’re about to find out. Hi Jolly was actually a Syrian immigrant who was hired by the federal government to introduce camels into the parched deserts of the American Southwest.

Though the plan was scrapped, Hadji Ali–also known as Hi Jolly stayed on and lived out the rest of his days in Quartzsite. He died in the early 20th century and in the ’30s a bronze camel was placed at his tomb by townspeople who loved and admired him. The tomb is in town and free, so don’t miss it.

Show attendance tips

It is always a good idea to plan your itinerary ahead of your travel. Think about what you want to buy, and the shows you want to attend, and plan your days.

As the vast majority of the Quartzsite shows are outdoors, I cannot stress enough how important it is to wear comfortable shoes, a wide-brimmed hat and sunscreen, carry water, and take breaks. Be prepared for cool or warm weather. That’s the desert in the winter. Be prepared to walk a lot of miles in the dusty aisles of the shows.

Also remember to keep detailed notes of what you are looking at or buying—which show, what item, what price, which dealer, what booth number, what day. By the end of the day, it all becomes a blur and if you want to go back and revisit a dealer those notes will be your life-saver.

Finally, have patience. If you are coming in at peak time, traffic on the Interstate exit ramps can be gridlock as there are only stop signs on the overpasses. Lots of patience is also required when waiting about an hour in line for dinner at the few restaurants in town.

To be sure, there are plenty of other Quartzsite shows—if one counts the hundreds of vendors and shops.

13 Tips for Attending an RV Show

I’ve lost count of how many RV shows we’ve attended. So, here are our expert tips for attending an RV show whether this is your first RV show or your hundredth.

Dania and I love attending RV shows. It’s a great way for us to stay up-to-date on the latest innovations in the RV community.

We also attend RV shows because we really enjoy them! We often run into fellow RVers we’ve met on the road and it’s a great place to make new friends, too.

The RV Show season starts in January and runs through late May. After summer break it picks up again in September and runs until almost Thanksgiving. To see a complete month-by-month RV show schedule see RV Show List for 2024.

RV shows need not be intimidating

I know the thought of milling through a crowded convention center and parking lot can seem overwhelming to some. After all, it’s not uncommon to have to wait in lines to enter new models or have to squeeze through to see new RV products.

But the crowds aren’t always that bad. Plus, there’s a great deal you can do to prepare for an RV show before you arrive and before every day you attend.

I will share those tips with you so you can make the most of attending an RV show.

The following RV show tips will help whether you’re attending large RV shows known nationwide or local shows nearby. It doesn’t matter the size of the show or your purpose for visiting; they will help you have the best visit possible.

Of course, if you attend some of the larger shows like the Hershey America’s Largest RV Show, Florida RV SuperShow, or the FMCA Convention and RV Expo these tips turn into must-dos!

Quartzsite RV Show © Rex Vogel, all rights reserved

1. Bring a pen or marker

I know the days of writing things down are dying but a pen or marker will really come in handy. Most RV dealers and vendor booths hand out flyers or brochures. So, it’s helpful to be able to write notes on them as you speak with the representative.

The writing utensil will also come in handy with Tip #3 below.

2. Arrive early

Arrive as soon as you can check-in. Many attendees tend to mosey in a couple to a few hours after the doors open. And that moseying quickly turns into long lines and people blocking your path as they try to figure out where to go.

Arriving early gives you a big head start that helps you stay ahead of the crowds of people all day.

Pro tip: You should also arrive at least 10 minutes early to seminars and presentations. You’d be surprised at how quickly these fill up.

FMCA International Rally, Perry, Georgia © Rex Vogel, all rights reserved

3. Know the layout

Take some time to look at the map you received at registration to familiarize yourself with the giant center and outdoor spaces. Ideally, you can do this the night before or before the doors open. If that’s not possible at least do it before you walk off in a random direction.

It’s a good idea to mark the map with your trusty pen or marker from Tip #1. Highlight any of the must-see booths, newest models, and new products you really want to see.

As you do, the most efficient path to see everything you want will reveal itself. Don’t forget to factor in stopping for snacks and bathroom breaks. Mapping this out can save LOTS of time which is why I recommend the next tip, too…

4. Plan each day the night before

If you are attending one of the big RV shows that you can’t see in a day, I highly recommend you plan each day the night before. Take your map and pull up the show’s website to review the special events each day like educational seminars.

As you plan, you can consider whether or not you need to do the next tip.

It’s a dog’s world at the FMCA Indio, California show © Rex Vogel, all rights reserved

5. Divide and conquer

If you’re worried you won’t get to everything you want to do, divide and conquer! You can cover different sections and attend different seminars. Then, you can share highlights with each other at the end of the day. This is another time when it helps to take notes with your trusty pen from Tip #1!

6. Schedule breaks

As you plan your day don’t forget to schedule in breaks. Look for nice places along your route that would be the best place to rest and mark it.

There are usually more chairs available near food vendors and seminar areas (where you can sit between seminars). You can also schedule a mid-day break when you return to your RV for lunch. This brings me to my next tip.

Quartzsite RV Show © Rex Vogel, all rights reserved

7. Plan your meals

There will be lots of food around the show but it’s usually more expensive and sometimes less convenient than eating in your RV. So, when making your daily plan, consider where you want to eat and when.

8. Don’t overschedule

As you plan out all these things don’t overschedule yourself! Seriously, take your time! There is so much to see and enjoy that you don’t want to rush through it.

Trying to do too much in too little time is the surest way to turn a fun RV show into a frustrating experience.

Quartzsite RV Show © Rex Vogel, all rights reserved

9. Enter drawings for giveaways

Most vendors give out small freebies like candies and pens. But, many vendors have drawings for RV accessories, free stays in RV resorts, and other big prizes.

Someone has to win. Why not you?!

Entering a giveaway usually means you’ll start receiving emails and maybe even snail mail from the company but it’s really not that bad. You can usually easily unsubscribe.

Many of these companies are small businesses so it’s not like they’re going to sell your contact information. They just want to send you future promotions which can get you a better deal on something you might want.

Quartzsite RV Show © Rex Vogel, all rights reserved

10. Don’t buy the first thing

Don’t buy the first thing you see or think you need. Chances are, another vendor has the same item. You might be able to find it at a better price or choose from more styles and colors.

Mark possible purchases on your trusty map and circle back around to it if you decide to buy it. But don’t wait too long as some venders sell out.

11. Take pictures

Start with a fully-charged phone and keep it handy to take pictures throughout the day. It’ll help you keep track of things you want (either now or in the future). It’ll help you compare products and circle back around to your final decision.

12. Don’t be pressured to buy

This is an IMPORTANT TIP! Do not be pressured to buy that day. Quite a few sales reps will try to put time pressure on you to make the sale. Don’t give in to it.

In fact, if a salesman says, “This deal is only good for today” then you should probably walk away. In my opinion, that’s a red flag that the salesman is relying more on his salesmanship than giving you an honest good deal.

The best deal shouldn’t require you to buy a travel trailer, fifth wheel, toy hauler, motorhome, or any RV by the end of the business day.

Quartzsite RV Show © Rex Vogel, all rights reserved

13. Wear comfortable shoes

I’m going to end this list with a very practical and vital tip. Wear comfortable shoes! You’ll be doing a lot of walking and standing all day long.

The Hershey show which is America’s largest RV show is the size of 33 football fields! So, I highly recommend wearing some comfortable sneakers or even lightweight hiking shoes.

Worth Pondering…

By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.

Quartzsite: Here’s the 2024 QZ Show Schedule

These days, it’s also a mecca to well over a million visitors each year, most of whom converge on this small town in a wave of RVs during January and February.

Quartzsite RV Show © Rex Vogel, all rights reserved

Quartzsite Sports, Vacation & RV Show

For nine days, RVers descend on the giant exhibit tent to see the latest gadgets, get work and upgrades done on their RVs, and learn more about the RV lifestyle with workshops and seminars where attendees can learn about topics from trip planning to safety upgrades, solar and batteries, boondocking, and how to shop for an RV.

Hi, Jolly was actually a Syrian immigrant who was hired by the federal government to introduce camels into the parched deserts of the American Southwest.

Want to know more about Quartzsite?

Let the shows begin!

See you at the Q!

Worth Pondering…

Nowhere on earth will you find such an assortment of stuff as you will at Quartzsite from mid-December to mid-February. As the saying goes, “If you can’t find it in Quartzsite, you won’t find it anywhere.”

2023 RV Show Tips: How to Get the Most Out of Your Show Visit

RV shows are wonderful opportunities to discover the latest travel trailer and motorhome models

If you’re like me, you love to check out the newest RVs on the market and shop for the latest RV gadgets. There isn’t anything like attending an RV supershow with thousands of other people. With the increase in RV popularity and the season of RV supershows upon us, it’s the perfect time to talk about tips for attending an RV show.

Purchase your tickets in advance

Everyone loves a discount! Save yourself money and time spent standing in long lines by purchasing your tickets in advance. Most RV shows offer early-bird pricing and when you combine early-bird prices with a military or a senior discount, you’ll most likely save enough to pay for ice cream or a root beer float the day of the show.

Parking at Quartzsite RV Show © Rex Vogel, all rights reserved

Parking

Before heading to the show, scope out the parking lots, RV parking areas, and shuttle stops. Most shows have accessible parking, but since those spaces fill up fast it’s a good idea to have an alternative plan if you can’t find a spot up close. Also, don’t forget to bring cash with you. Parking fees often cost upwards of $20 per day and at some RV shows parking attendants only accept cash.

Know what you want

Do your research and know what you want before you go. Have a good idea of the features you need in a new RV. It’s also important to know what you don’t need or want before you go. It’s very easy to get blinded by things you don’t really intend to buy and make an impulse purchase that you may later come to regret. Check out my guide to motorhomes and towables and look over the style of RV you want and get some solid ideas before you go.

Quartzsite RV Show © Rex Vogel, all rights reserved

Arrange your own financing first

It may sound a little silly, but you should always check with your local bank or lending institute before you make a purchase. If you’re already established there, chances are good that they will have a great rate and you might then have a little extra to spend on the RV itself. Putting yourself into a pre-approved loan status will also give you greater bargaining power.

>> Read Next: The Ultimate Guide to RV Shows

Set a firm budget

This one is the hardest to do, trust me. If you’re pre-approved at your local bank you already know what you can spend. If you go in and are going to use the dealer financing have a set budget in mind so you don’t overspend. It is just like buying a new car and those options and extras may look appealing at the time but down the road when you’re struggling to make the payments, was it really worth it?

Quartzsite RV Show © Rex Vogel, all rights reserved

Look around

Ever go to buy a car and buy the first one you see? No, you check out some other ones and test drive a few. The same goes for buying a new RV. When you get to the show, check everything out. You may find that your needs and wants change as you shop. Plus it gives you an excuse to keep looking and thinking about that purchase. It never hurts to ask the salespeople if they have any used models back at the lot, too. You may want to buy that new one that day, but there might be a used one for way less just down the road.

Attend seminars

RV shows are the perfect place to attend seminars because the bigger shows attract industry experts from every corner of the RV world. If you’re lucky, you might get to see your favorite YouTuber speak or learn how to turn your factory rig into something fabulous. Most RV shows publish a schedule of seminars on their event website and event guide.

Tip: RV show seminars fill up quickly. Get to the seminar room early to secure a spot.

RV show sales display © Rex Vogel, all rights reserved

Wheelchair and scooter rentals

Most big RV shows have a wheelchair and scooter rentals on-site. You can avoid long lines or the possibility of sold-out rentals by reserving your rental online before you get to the show.

Have a game plan

Large RV shows are exciting but they can be overwhelming. It’s easy to get distracted and forget what you came to see or buy. Whether you go to an RV show to walk through the biggest Class A motorhomes, sit inside a tiny teardrop, or stock up on your favorite tank cleaner, it’s a good idea to come up with a game plan before you head into the sea of RVs.

>> Read Next: RV Shows: One-Stop RV Shopping

Most RV shows make their event guides available electronically. Read through the guide online before you go to the show and make a note of where you want to go and what you want to see. Whether you use a small notebook or take notes on your phone, write down the areas you don’t want to miss. Then, when you get distracted, all you’ll have to do is refer to your notes.

RV show display © Rex Vogel, all rights reserved

Watch the weather and prepare for fun

The best way to enjoy yourself at an RV show is to make sure you’re comfortable and dressed for the weather. Take along a raincoat if the forecast calls for rain, or bring a tube of sunscreen and a hat if the weather is warm. No matter the season, wear good shoes made for walking and don’t forget a refillable water bottle.

Have fun

I have an RV and have no intentions of buying a new one any time soon. That doesn’t stop me from going to a local RV show to just look around and see the new stuff. It’s fun and anything that reminds me of camping during a time when I can’t go camping is a winner in my book.

Worth Pondering…

The RV lifestyle is like nothing else.

It’s leaving home, exploring America, and yet bringing your home along with you!

Stopping at a wayside picnic area, preparing lunch in your kitchen.

It’s sleeping in your own bed every night, yet waking up to a new vista each morning!

The sounds of a crackling campfire; of a mountain stream, of frogs, and crickets.

It’s families drawn closer; it’s retirees being rewarded for many years of labor.
